April 22, 2008 is PAY EQUITY DAY

AAUW Action Network

Since AAUW's founding over 125 years ago, women have made great strides toward achieving equality of opportunity, and AAUW has long been a key catalyst for such change. Despite gains made in the areas of economic security, education, and civil rights, there is still unfinished business-because equity is still an issue. AAUW members recognize and are proud of the important gains women have made and remain steadfast in the commitment to creating a level playing field for all women and girls. The work of AAUW builds upon a century of responsible public participation, and AAUW encourages you to get involved and take action on issues important to you.

Interviews featuring AAUW's most recent research Behind the Pay Gap report aired on the Today Show, Good Morning America, and CBS Early Morning, Anderson Cooper 360, and affiliate stations in Portland, Medford, Klamath Falls and Eugene.  Pay equity is central to AAUW's biennial theme, Education as the Gateway to Women's Economic Security.  Women are working more than ever but remain collectively in undervalued, lower-paying occupations with fewer benefits for themselves, their children, and their elder family members.  THe current wage gap in Oregon is 77 cents earned by women for every dollar earned by men based on the 2005 Census.

Salem AAUW has worked in coalition with county and city leaders and Business and Professional Women's Organization, BPW to highlight the wage gap with Unhappy Hour meetings.  At Unhappy Hour, women pay $.77 on the dollar for their refreshments and discuss the options for change in wages, hours, benefits and childcare that could relieve the effects of the wage gap. www.bpwusa.org

AAUW has developed a Pay Equity Resource Kit to develop programs that will have a positive impact on the wage gap and help women become equal earners. http://www.aauw.org/issue_advocacy/actionpages/payequity.cfm

Expanding Your Horizons Conference in Science and Mathematics (EYH) is an annual one-day event to engage middle school girls in careers that involve science and math. This national program is in its 24th year in Salem, and has served over 300,000 girls since its inception at Mills College. www.expandingyourhorizons.org

Each girl selects four hands-on workshops from the registration form. These sessions are led by women who use science and math in their work, and will ask students to solve puzzles, make structures, use a microscope and learn about a career choice they may have never considered. The $18 registration includes materials, lunch, and a snack.

AAUW research showed that girls lose interest in math and science classes in middle school. This can restrict their career options later in life, especially in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields which often are higher-paying jobs. For more in formation, check www.aauw.org RESEARCH tab.
